The cognitive path to enlightenment

Seize a contradiction – what beliefs do you hold that are in logical conflict?  (Choose psychological truths or social tenets or scientific hypotheses, as seem to you today to be most ripe and poignant.)  Savor the paradox.  Affirm both sides.  Refine and sharpen the contradiction, until it is reduced to its starkest essence.  Analyze and probe with logic.  Dwell right there, fervently seeking resolution and finding none.

«L'enfance c'est le monde du miracle et du merveilleux : c'est comme si la création surgissait, lumineuse, de la nuit, toute neuve et toute fraîche, et tout étonnante. Il n'y a plus d'enfance à partir du moment où les choses ne sont plus étonnantes. […]. C'est bien cela le paradis, le monde du premier jour. Etre chassé de l'enfance, c'est être chassé du paradis, c'est être adulte» (Journal en Miettes, p55)

"Childhood is the domain of miracle, in which creation bursts forth from the night, luminous and fresh and astonishing. Childhood ends when things cease to astonish us...to grow into an adult is to be chased from the garden of Eden."
~ from Fragments of a Journal (literally Journal in Crumbs), by Eugene Ionesco, born this day in 1909

Ionesco's art derives from the ability to perceive absurdity in everyday life, retained into maturity.

"The world of actuality melts in every moment...as though all were untethered from its moorings.... What remains - vividly present - is a tearing of the veil of appearances"

"The universe seems to me infinitely strange and foreign. At such a moment I gaze upon it with a mixture of anguish and euphoria..."

For a scientist, studying the human brain is an experience like looking in a deep mirror. Slowly, progress is being made in mapping the connections between mind and brain.

"OUR brains form a million new connections for every second of our lives. It is a mind-blowing statistic, and one that highlights the amazing flexibility of our most enigmatic organ. While the figure emphasises how much we still have to learn about brain structure, it also reveals the huge importance of our everyday experiences in making our brains what they are...Today, neuroscientists are increasingly concentrating on how the way we live our lives creates profound and often long-lasting changes in the structure and connectivity of our brains."

I am the speeding
spark of light
flung by God
from the forge of Chaos.

I soar on wings
swifter than wind
above the paths
of the pulsing stars.

If you don't find God in the next person you meet,
it is a waste of time looking for him further.
