Linus Pauling was personally responsible for the modern view of the chemical bond.  In the 1950s, he was also a powerful advocate for restraint in testing and development of nuclear weapons.  He was awarded Nobel prizes for both Chemistry and Peace.

Hormesis is the tendency of a biology organism to over-compensate to stress, so the organism paradoxically does better than one that isn’t stressed. Lab animals live longer if they’re exercised, if they’re starved or exposed to low doses of toxins or radiation, or disease or heat or cold or physical injury.

It seems we were designed for challenge.
